A DAY IN THE LIFE

You’ve signed up to participate, and now it’s the day of the experiment!

What should you expect?

What should I bring to the lab?

Your 4-digit SONA ID number! After registering for the experiment, you should receive an email from SONA with a participant ID number. Because experiments are conducted anonymously and data are collected anonymously, the only thing we can use to identify you in the lab is your SONA ID. Please have this information ready when you arrive.

Where is the lab?

The LAB is located at S296 Gibson Hall, 1540 Jefferson Park Ave, Charlottesville, VA 22904. Click here for a map and directions.

When should I arrive?

Be early! We recommend arriving at least 10 minutes before the start of your scheduled experiment. Because some experiments require a precise number of participants, the session may fill up, and you won’t be able to participate.

What happens in the lab?

Researchers will issue specific instructions that require your full attention. It’s important to follow all guidance from researchers or lab assistants. Most experiments involve using a laptop computer to perform tasks, exercises, games or to complete questions and surveys. All in-lab experiments are non-invasive and will not be physically demanding.

Experiments will last about 60-90 minutes from sign-in to check-out and payment.

I’ve completed all the tasks in the lab, can I leave?

Not yet! Wait for the researcher to direct you to check-out and debriefing. There, you’ll be asked to fill out a few more forms before receiving payment.

Thanks for participating!
